Zen's Guide Zen

This issue I promised to show you a few tips as to how to effectively fish P.V.A. bags, and the Korda style meshes and PVA selectionof course the ever faithful and highly effective, the original p.v.a. stringer, using thin tapes or p.v.a. string! Korda even do a couple of styles of woven string style meshes which are much stronger than standard p.v.a. strings, designed more for long range, where they have to withstand the force of impact.

I’ll just go on a bit here about that "impact", the bigger the bag hooked on, or slid down the hook length and a heavier lead say a 4oz can on impact snap some hook lengths. The 15lb or 15-20lb coated braids seem the worst ones, this is due to the inertia effect where the resistance of the bag

hitting the water is counteracted by the velocity of the lead on impact, something has to give! It works on the same principle as our seatbelts, another point is, that using 25lb hooklenghts, now puts that impact pressure elsewhere, normally on, lets say for arguments sake you are using the safety clip arrangements so popular today, then the swivel can pop-out of the clip slide up to the top of you safe zone leader just under the force of impact itself.

Then you will be effectively fishing a 2 and a half foot hook length instead of your preferred 6” hook link, or even worse for me, I’ve had so many leads fly off on impact, where the swivel has stayed tight but the tail rubber has given way. In these instances use a lighter lead as possible and a smaller p.v.a bag or stick to try to create the least amount of resistance on impact as possible.
